Community UMChina100Logo r72University of Minnesota begins yearlong China 100 celebration

As one of the first universities to resume academic exchanges with China in 1979, the University of Minnesota hopes to continue its strong commitment to developing more exchange and partnership opportunities with China in the next 100 years. During the 2013-2014 academic year, the University of Minnesota will celebrate China 100, a yearlong celebration honoring the first students from China and the wealth of connections that have come since. It recognizes the past and looks at future engagements between the University of Minnesota and China.

The University hosts more than 2,200 students and scholars from China each year and also holds more than 80 memorandum of agreements signed with some 30 Chinese universities as strategic partners. Its world-renowned faculty works with Chinese researchers to address some of the world’s most pressing problems.

If you were a Chinese student who studied at the University of Minnesota, or studied in China, or are a faculty member who does research in or about China and are willing to share your story, video or photos, the University of Minnesota would like to hear from you.

Meanwhile, one upcoming event is “Chinese Students at the University of Minnesota: The First 10 Years (1914 – 1924)” presented by Institute for Advanced Study Director and History Professor Ann Waltner. Waltner teaches Chinese history and world history with research interests in the social history of 16th and 17th century China. She also served as editor of the Journal of Asian Studies from 2000 to 2005 and has published widely on the history of Ming dynasty China and serves on the Advisory Council of University of Minnesota China Center.
