The University of Minnesota China Center invites you to a hybrid event featuring Mark Sidel, Doyle-Bascom Professor of Law and Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The event will be available both in person at the University International Center, Room 101, and online as a webinar.

The mechanisms of social control in China have expanded significantly in the Xi Jinping era. Prof. Sidel will discuss the range of these means of social control used in China, with an emphasis on contagion governance during Covid, the retention of some Covid-era social control mechanisms after Covid, and new tools for social control that have begun to emerge in the post-Covid era.

About the Speaker

Mark Sidel is Doyle-Bascom Professor of Law and Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has worked for many years on civil society policy and regulatory issues in China, India, Vietnam, and the United States, and frequently assists foundations, international NGOs, and other groups working in China.
