Psychology Today article highlights how belonging, critical consciousness, and community care support AAPI mental health, while challenging the model minority myth and calling for data disaggregation and culturally-grounded spaces.
An article published in the popular psychology journal *Psychology Today* on November 28th explores identity and mental health issues among Asian Pacific American (AAPI) Americans. The article points out that despite significant differences within the AAPI community, they share common discrimination, including the “permanent foreigner” stereotype and cultural commodification.

Psychological research shows that justice begins with a sense of belonging; people truly thrive when they feel seen, valued, and connected to their cultural roots. The article presents three core findings. First, developing critical thinking supports mental health and leadership; adolescents who build positive ethnic identities while understanding systemic inequalities demonstrate higher self-esteem and civic engagement. Second, racism, trauma, and misinterpretations shape intergenerational experiences; many Southeast Asian refugee families bear the trauma of war and displacement, while the “model minority” myth masks significant differences between different Asian groups, leading to systemic deficiencies in funding and social services. Third, community care and intergenerational connection are central to healing and justice; cultural heritage programs and anti-racist mentorship enhance a sense of belonging and resilience.

The article suggests supporting data segmentation research on Asian Pacific Americans to identify the needs of neglected groups; strengthening community spaces such as cultural organizations, language schools, and traditional programs; and challenging the myth of “model minorities” and cultural appropriation to amplify the authentic voices of Asian Pacific Americans.
