At its 23rd annual banquet on Oct. 26, the Chinese Senior Citizens Society (CSCS) awarded its first Mulan Award to Yin Simpson, for her outstanding devotion to her 94-year-old mother, Mrs. Moon Fong.

Created to honor one of the most fundamental (and some would say the root) of all Chinese values and traditions, that of filial piety, xiáo, CSCS wishes to pay tribute to individuals who have been quietly practicing it: taking care of their aged parents, often above and beyond the call of duty.   In naming its award after the legendary Hua MuLan, who took her father’s place in battle because her he was too old to fight, CSCS honors those who have made valiant efforts to honor and respect their parents.

Yin Simpson has always been close to her mother, Mrs. Fong.  When Mrs. Fong was no longer able to live independently, Yin and her husband, Scott, welcomed her into their home.   Mrs. Fong, an accomplished calligrapher and gourmet cook, continues to be an active volunteer for both CSCS and the Chinese Heritage Foundation; and Yin always finds time to drive her mother to these activities.  In addition, Yin frequently includes her mother in Yin’s own activities, bringing her along when ever possible.

CSCS honors Yin Simpson, a well-known couture designer and community volunteer extraordinaire, for her exemplary devotion to her mother, demonstrating that even in today’s busy life styles, it is possible to follow ancient Chinese Confucian precepts about the importance of respect of one’s elders.
