After the earthquake happened in China on May 12, many individuals and organizations immediately began to find ways to help the victims.
§ The first proposal came out for “Showing Love and rebuild a school in the earthquake areas.” Over 30 local Chinese organizations responded and joined immediately, and the number increased to over 40.
§ In order to accept online donations, CAAM and Minneapolis Foundation decided to create a special “China Earthquake School Reconstruction Fund.”
§ Volunteers worked with China Hospitality Center and North Heights Church for a relief concert location for victims of China earthquake.
§ Minhua Chorus started their fundraising for Love Fund, Minneapolis Foundation/China Earthquake School Reconstruction Fund, China Red Cross and American Red Cross, and collected more than US$12,000 in one month.
§ Shaanxi Folks Association (Shaanxi is the sister State of Minnesota) raised US$4,000.
§ Chinese Heritage Foundation and China Insight organized Passage to China event and the Earthquake Love Fund was promoted there. More than US$4,500 was raised.
§ The annual CAAM/CDT performance show, more than US$1,475 was raised.
§ Minhua Chinese Schools (including Minhua School, MCA and Yucai Chinese School) started to raise funds and collected more than US$14,000 in one month.
§ Local volunteers organized a “Tent for earthquake Victims” project, collected over US$14,000 and purchased 120 tents. They personally delivered to Chicago O’Hare International airport to be delivered to Sichaun directly.
§ Melody Hu and Nick Qiu organized a Piano Concert for fundraising, collected over US$1,300 for the Love Fund.
§ UCBC held the monthly meeting and collected donations for School reconstruction Fund. All donations were sent to Minneapolis Foundation; China Insight collected donations and sent to CAAM for School reconstruction Fund.
§ To this date, the Love Fund had collected donations of US$90,908.20.
§ The special relief concert for China earthquake victims organized by 40 plus local organizations, held at the North Heights Lutheran Church in Arden Hills, raised US$34,000.
The donated funds have been wired to China (Sichuan Chengdu Red Cross) via CAAM’s US Bank Acocunt: Jun. 24: US$40,000.00; Jun. 26: US$74,000.00; Aug. 11: US$36,000.
All of the money will be transferred to a special fund via Sichuan Chengdu Red Cross, specifically used for “Minnesota Chinese – Sichuan CongZhou Huaiyuan Middle School Relief Program” to help rebuild that school.
Editor’s Note: The community has demonstrated a concerted effort to assist in the recovery effort and there continues to be a need for assistance. Now that the Olympics is over and no longer a distraction, our attention can be directed to continue our support for the victims of the earthquake.
